Check the alignment of the deadbolt against the strike on the jamb if the lock is difficult to turn when the door is closed or the door doesn t lock at all. Thread the screwdriver through the large spindle. Once the door is open try to actuate the door latch with the handle. More force is needed to turn the knob and unstick the latch.

Pull the spindle from the center of the latch if applicable. The handle or knob must be jiggled to unstick the latch. You re going to need a screwdriver with a skinny rod because the thicker rod won t be able to fit through the hole. If the locking mechanism is a latchbolt the kind of bolt that is spring loaded and has one angled edge and the angled edge is facing away from you you can hook it with a wire hanger.

Push and hold the button in. Use a file to widen the hole on the strike or remove the strike with a screwdriver and reposition it on the jamb. Start by trying to push the lock button. Release the button quickly try sliding your finger off the button so the pressure is maintained up until the precise moment of release with no backing off.
